Liam Byrne, a Labour Cabinet minister who told the new Government that there was no money left, has pocketed a near-£20,000 pay-off. Mr Byrne, the former Chief Secretary to the Treasury, left a handwritten note in his desk, warning his successor that there was no money left.
Now, it has emerged that Mr Byrne, who is still a Labour MP, accepted a severance payment of £19,589 when he left the Government.
Mr Byrne was one of five Treasury ministers, who received a total of £64,766 in severance payments, figures show.
